At 14,179ft above see level, Mt Shasta is the second highest peak in the Cascades. Shasta dominates the skyline from miles away, rising 10,000ft above the landscape it is surrounded by. Mount Shasta provides the perfect grounds for foundational glacier skills coursework, and is a formidable endurance challenge.
-
Glacier School on Mt. Shasta means a North side summit climb with time for skills training and snow school on the glacier. The Glacier II course is a 5 day course and climb designed for the emerging mountaineer who wants to deepen their essential glacier travel and mountaineering skills, building on a pre-existing foundation of crampon and ice axe usage. This course provides an opportunity to learn crevasse rescue techniques, practice snow anchors, and possibly ice climbing, all while climbing a glacier route on Mt. Shasta’s remote northern aspect. The time is spent on a full, advanced curriculum of glacier skills and acclimating prior to the summit climb on the Hotlum Glacier or a similar route (route selection is dependent on the season’s conditions).
