The Kilimanjaro Scholarship

The Roof of Africa. The Serengeti. Elephants, zebras and lions. Zanzibar. Incredible food, rich culture, and hakuna matata: welcome to Tanzania. Join AWExpeditions for an unforgettable climb of 19,341ft Kilimanjaro, one of the Seven Summits. Please note that you must have a valid passport in order to participate in this expedition.

The Kilimanjaro scholarship includes the expedition fee for an all-women 7-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, a $500 flight stipend to help offset your travel expenses to Tanzania, top-notch mountaineering footwear from LOWA Boots, and more. This scholarship is valued at >$5,000.

  • A free-standing dormant volcano on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, Kilimanjaro is the roof of Africa and one of the Seven Summits. Kilimanjaro is located in northeast Tanzania, in close proximity to the Kenyan border, and only some 50 miles northeast of Arusha. This is a demanding trip yet suitable for first-time trekkers with a desire to push themselves in a mountain environment.

  • Climbing Kilimanjaro is a spectacular experience as the seven-day trek covers five different vegetation zones from the lush plains of Africa to the volcano’s glaciated peak. Summiting Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route from the southwest involves long stretches of steep scree on summit day and a few exposed scrambling moves through the Barranco Wall earlier in the trek, but no meaningful high-angle climbing or glaciated terrain.
